Minimalism: Design, Meaning, and its Immense impact
Starting out as just a concept of living. Now this marketing design and phenomenon has been adapted by some of world's largest brands. That is – Minimalism.
In today’s tech arena, this term has a revised meaning. Minimalism means getting rid of mental and physical clutter. In other words, the removal of anything unnecessary or not purchasing and keeping beyond what is useful or what is outside your means. This concept could possibly be more pushed by today's generation of progressive thinkers, thoughts for preservation of earth's resources and such. Consume less, so you waste less. As well as with our busy consumers of today, a minimalistic approach focuses on what's important and the bare essentials, so that you have time for more important things in life. In terms of design it means, say more with less, and this concept is taken in account to attract consumers around the world. Let's take for example one of the biggest brands out there - Apple - who has embraced this concept enormously [Perhaps to attract the progressive thinkers of today].
>Sleek- simple design of all its products.
>Small yet powerful [iPhone, iPad, MacAir]. You ever wonder why electronics are getting thinner and smaller?
>Check their website! Simple navigation, white background, great graphics, and minimum use of paragraphs of text as much as possible. When you go on to know more about each product however, the website then offers the most valuable information. Their graphics and icons are not scattered, rather more synchronized, even and s p a c e d. A thin san-serif font is used throughout the site, which is also spaced and bold colors are not extravagant throughout the site.
I know many are thinking, “Yea, cool, we know what that is, we'll use it, we'll see”, but the amount of impact it has on consumers is mind-blowing. And I will explain why, here.
Because, it's not just a design.
Not only is this concept pleasing to the eye, but it evokes a certain type of feeling. It could be a calm and serene feeling, relaxing, or it could be a feeling of sophistication, and even power perhaps.
Less clutter, proper alignment, adequate white space with colored space with calm colors, relaxes the mind. In this type of design, consumer may feel well informed, and it may make it easier for consumer to finalize a decision. With all the information being tossed at and retrieved by consumers today, via the internet, a minimalistic design can make a consumer's life easier. This type of design is also very “To-the-point”.
One of the many perks of this design is that it can empower the brand, and make it seem superior in the minds of the consumer. Why does Chanel advertise in only black and white? It’s not only an everlasting color combo, but it screams sophistication, sharp style and class. Have you seen their website? Yes, this can happen with great design. The consumer may intuitively take a brand as superior with this type of design technique.
A simple design is not only pleasing to the human eye, but also captures intensity of information or picture presented, because everything unnecessary is out of the way. We can apply this concept of minimalism to various design areas: interior design, architecture, product design, website design, font types, graphics, and perhaps even more.
Take interior design, whether for home or office. A minimalistic interior design will consist of less colors, more neutrality and less accessories. In architecture, there will be fewer amounts of smaller details and more of bolder edges and feeling of openness and tranquility. With product design, specifically electronics, it would be slim and sleek designs, with simple navigation, and for other products, simple and solid colors and features. Font types may consist of spaced thin letters, and not a lot of bold elements. With graphics, it can consist of one simple design, strategically placed on a certain area of the image, creating a very subtle effect. Or even a photograph that evokes those serene emotions because of its minimalistic approach.
What a minimalistic design will not consist of is big and plentiful animated designs, colorful, shadowed graphics, and bold patterns. For websites this means – less links and straightforward content. Does this mean that you strip all colors and make it boring, when designing this way? No, but giving a graphic or website more meaning, with calm combination of colors, and elegant structure is what this design scheme is about.
Benefits of Minimal design
Your brand will naturally be deemed as more modern and powerful. As I mentioned before some of the world's largest brands have embraced this. It speaks volume, with what little that it is. This concept has been around for a while, but recently, and especially with brands like Apple and today's increasing population of sustainable thinkers, it is more widely used than ever before.
It will require less effort. The less you do the better in minimalistic design. As long as it’s neat, and has looks of quality, your design can be very appealing. Nevertheless, it is always good to be sure that all the essentials are there and that your message is getting across to the consumer.
Time-Hungry consumers will love you. They will get on a website, and immediately know what the business is about. The link title is to the point, and website is fairly quick to navigate and get around. In addition, great graphics give consumers all the necessary angles, and descriptions that are all important in their decision making. This is what consumers want today, quick decision-making. Today's consumers are multi-taskers and are constantly in crunch for time. A cleverly designed website knows its consumers, and strips away all unnecessary detail to get the results it wants.
This design approach does not always have to be used, but depending on the message a brand wants to get across, it may be a very important and powerful tool – when being conscious of the consumers of today.
How to come up with a great logo?
A great company logo can make your brand easily recognizable no matter how it is used. If you place a great company logo in an ad, press release, white paper or on your website, people will instantly know that all of those things have to do with your brand. A logo that is done right can say so much by using so little text and pixels. Ad space can be expensive based on the size of the ad. A recognizable company logo can help you save money.
We have to agree that most industries are filled to the brim with competitors. A company needs to find ways to stand out amongst the crowd in order to survive. Creating a great company logo can help your company stand out in your industry.
Of course the first step to making a great logo that is unique and therefore has the chance of being recognizable is thinking of a unique logo name. Think of a name that represents all that your company stands for. Now think about how to sum this up in one to three words. The less words that are used in the logo name, the more unique it has to be to get the company’s brand across. The more exclusive a company logo is the more recognizable it will be to your target audience. The most famous logos sometimes just have a letter or two as names. Remember, in this case fewer is better.
It is tempting to copy other company logos that are in the same industry. Especially the logos that are popular. You need to create a logo that is not like any other company logo. Otherwise you risk the chance of people believing your company is part of a competitor’s company. Sometimes you may see patterns that companies use in your industry for their logos. Even this should not be done just because they are doing it. Only if these patterns of design fall under what your brand represents. So if one company has a futuristic design, then you should only have one too because a futuristic design best represents what your company is about.
Still, when determining your company logo, the focus should be inward and not outward. The company logo has only two ways to describe what your brand is and they are called logomark and logotype. So focusing on the company itself instead of what others have done in the industry will help to pinpoint the best ways to present the brand. It is fine to look for other companies for inspiration, but copying another company logo just because that company is successful should be avoided.
The decision to use logomark, logotype or both should rely on you and not on what others typically do in your industry. Logomark is a logo as an image and logotype is a logo as text. When trying to decide which to use or if both should be used you must ask yourself the following two questions. Firstly, what is the best way to educate my target audience about my brand? Secondly, what is the best way to engage my target audience? These questions are what should be asked in every part of the logo creation process. Don’t ask what other successful companies are doing in your industry when it comes to company logos.
Some companies find it better to just use a logomark. A picture is worth a thousand words. Also, since we are now in a global market and if you plan on doing business with other cultures, focusing on creating a logomark to represent your brand may be a great idea. Images are much easier to understand among different people than text. Your logotype may be based on a common phrase in your country, but consider what it might mean to someone else in another culture.
When you figure out what you are going to say in your company logo, you need to know how you are going to say it. Think about how you would describe your brand to someone and who is it meant to appeal to. You don’t have to use text to do this; it can all be done with the right image. If you want people to associate your company with a simpler time, then your logo needs to represent just that. Using a logo that looks futuristic would not be the proper approach, even if that is what others are doing in your industry.
When drafting your logo, it is very tempting to use vivid colors. Most companies want their logos to drip with color since most companies believe that it is color that catches a person’s eye. It is more about the message than the color. As mentioned before, as long as you create the right message to symbolize your brand then you should have no issue with creating a final logo that works.
When creating a logo it is recommended to just use black and white so that you can focus on what is actually being said by the logo. You want the company logo to be engaging even without vibrant colors, since you may have to make your logo black and white in some promotional materials. Furthermore, relying on only color to engage with people means that the logo itself is a weak representation of the brand.
When you think about some of the most famous logos, you don’t think about the color. You think about the image design and about the text if any is used. When you think about these famous logos, you have seen them in various sizes and sometimes in different colors. These logos are versatile. Your company logo should be as well. Don’t just think about one size or color. You should think about how your logo would look in as many different color schemes and sizes as possible. You should focus on whether your logo says the same thing every time. If you find that it loses its power to engage or its meaning when placed in different sizes or colors, then it should go back to the drawing board.
The True Value Of Google Plus
So, how much time is left in 2013? How many hours you’ve spent on the internet, how many hours you’ve been driving, walking, basically how have you spent your hours? Every year the number of internet users is increasing at an exponential rate and with programs set in place that help get the internet to the underprivileged; increases even more users.
Our daily web browsing or in my case – while working at home. One of the most used sites in my opinion is www.Google.com. Google is used many times on a daily basis. Doesn’t that make a statement already; it’s so integrated in our lives. The “Go-To” answer portal for personal, professional, umm who am I kidding, the” Go-To” for ANY problem. I’m guilty of it myself, from the perfect outfit to room accessories to scrumptious recipes. Google has it all. Google is King.
Alongside our Google addiction, we are also addicted to social networks. And now the world's greatest search engine, has its own branch of social networking tid bit - Google+, that was launched back in 2011, which is fairly new is sort of a breakthrough and advancement for those that don’t know how much impact it has on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for businesses. This doesn't mean that anyone can make a profile and be at the top of the ranks, but with some greater knowledge of its special features and tricks, it can be a powerful tool for businesses, to increase their search ranks – on where else Google! Here are some of the powers that Google+ has, regarding SEO:
GOOGLE+ and its POWER over SEO
Google Authorship: Is a big feature in Google+ for SEO, businesses can link their websites, or writers can link their works, next to their name with a picture, actually displayed within the search. Twitter, Facebook and other account links can be displayed here as well. This feature is mainly targeted towards Authors or Writers who have works published.
There are a few reasons why Google did that. One is to eliminate duplicate content and plagiarism, and second to increase search results, and for publishers who have actual authority. These search results have pictures with them, which attracts more. Just like an author’s picture towards the back of an actual book.
The Links: In addition to all this Google Plus’ authorship commotion, several places on the Google+ page, where you can place links to improve rank.
· First of all the links on a profile’s about page is important. The about page has its own PageRank and can contain any word.
· Another link can be placed in the Business’ about page, same importance as profile’s about page.
· Any links on Photos page.
· Links to external websites. (If the profile is public). The link if public gives profile ranking.
· Hyperlinks in posts
+Mentions: These mentions provide links to profiles, which in turn helps increase rank and publicity. As well as it gives recognition, while in a discussion or conversing on Google plus.
Google Activities: Hanging out, sharing, events and check-ins all provide benefits for profile ranking. One person share to their profiles, the creator gets exposed to then even more profiles or pages. Sort of the art of social networking.
Hashtags: Hashtags in Google+ connects to every search in the platform.
Ranking of posts: Pages or profiles that are public, have posts that stay longer in search results, then let's say tweets. As well as each post, is a link of its own and when a page is shared, the links follow.
It shouldn't be assumed that merely having a Google+ account, automatically yields greater ranks, but like I mentioned before, through strategic placement of links, photos, and wording on Google plus pages and profiles can significantly increase ranks. There is an hour long debate on YouTube, for those who believe Google+ has great power and for those who believe it doesn't. Precise Google+ expertise can do wonders, for those who are skeptics.
From my own experience, I know that searching anyone's name, gives their Google plus profile on the first page of the search. My profile's private so this won't happen. But it's a sure thing, for the ones that are public.
Google's +1 or Plus One
Like Facebook likes, before July 2013, Google and it's Plus ones, (where you hit the +1) whenever you enjoyed someone else's post, indicated that the post was liked, admired, favorited, etc. However, after July 2013, the +1 creates a recommended post in the stream of the person's followers, a little bit like sharing a post, but this is randomly shared by Google itself. Hence, one of the benefits of having a Google plus account. Not all posts get recommended. Google uses some algorithm and methodology to choose. Google also creates an add button on the posts that are “plussed”, to give an option to add the creator of the post. Several experiments have also been done which proves that the more plus ones a certain post receives the higher its search rank will be on Google.
Of course, the more interesting the content, the more plus ones a post will receive, the higher the ranking will be.
Colorful and eye-catching images, as well as catchy and more personalized posts, can create more interest in a post. The more related words, and trending topics via hashtag that are relevant to an audience who is searching, the better the chance the post will then come in the search results.
In the end, it really all boils down to the power of the people, the more people in circles, the more interesting content people create, will get the activity going and with some knowledge of Google plus' special tricks, there's a large chance that a post can show up on the world's greatest search engine. Now creating this new task of search engine optimization is a huge goal of many.
Google recently released its new search algorithms, with the code of Hummingbird. Google wants to give a more intuitive, simple, and personalized search result. Questions like, “Where should I eat?”, could very much lead to “Eat here, your friend works here, you should get desert here”. Google wants to predict what the user is searching and then give a personalized or great result, as well as keeping ad revenues in mind.
Some propose a broad statement that Google plus search could possibly become the next Google! We'll just have to wait to find that out.
