About Murgitroyd
Murgitroyd is an international patent and trademark law firm that supports global clients with end-to-end intellectual property (IP) services. With a legacy system built on IBM Notes and Domino, Murgitroyd was struggling to keep up with modern usability and performance expectations.
Their leadership approached Imaginovation to rebuild their legacy customer portal into a scalable, modern web application that could not only serve their clients better but also differentiate the firm in the competitive legal services market.

The Challenge
Murgitroyd’s internal client portal was outdated, limited in functionality, and difficult to scale. Built on IBM Domino, it lacked modern UX capabilities and real-time responsiveness.
The main challenge was migrating critical client data from Domino while designing and developing an intuitive, scalable interface that clients and internal teams could rely on.
The firm needed a complete overhaul—UI, backend architecture, and data infrastructure—to support its evolving business model.
Our Strategy
To modernize Murgitroyd’s legacy portal, we followed a structured, multi-phase approach—starting with system analysis and planning, followed by collaborative design, full-scale development, thorough testing, and a secure deployment.
Phase 1
Discovery
We began with a deep dive into the existing system architecture and workflows. Our goal was to thoroughly understand the limitations of the legacy portal and the expectations for the new system, both from a user and technical standpoint.
Phase 2
Planning
Once we assessed the IBM Domino environment, our team worked with Murgitroyd to define key objectives for the new portal, including seamless data migration, enhanced UI/UX, and robust backend performance. We prioritized scalability and usability in the planning stage.
Phase 3
Design
Our graphic designers collaborated closely with the client to define the new user experience. Using InVision, we built interactive prototypes that captured the ideal visual design and navigation structure. Every element was designed with the end user in mind—IP attorneys, clients, and internal teams.
Phase 4
Development
We rebuilt the entire system architecture from scratch. The backend was developed using Java, and the frontend was built with Angular for a responsive, dynamic user interface. We used PostgreSQL to manage the migrated data and support future scalability. Security and data integrity were prioritized throughout development.
Phase 5
Testing & Security
Over eight weeks, we conducted rigorous QA cycles to ensure all features worked seamlessly across devices and use cases. Security protocols were tested extensively to ensure confidentiality and compliance with industry standards.
Phase 6
Launch & Maintenance
The platform was successfully integrated into Murgitroyd’s main website as a secure, standalone customer portal. It features real-time case tracking, deadline alerts, and cost summaries, providing clients with an at-a-glance view of their IP portfolio. Post-launch, we’ve continued to support and enhance the platform as needed.

The Solution
We transformed Murgitroyd’s legacy IBM Domino-based portal into a modern, secure, and scalable web application tailored to their business. The new platform offers:
- A streamlined, modern user interface
- Integrated reminders for deadlines and costs
- Real-time access to intellectual property portfolios
- A robust backend infrastructure to support continuous growth
It not only improved internal operations but also became a powerful tool for Murgitroyd’s sales team, offering a differentiated, customer-first experience that few law firms can match.
